About

Edward Chudleigh, MBE, BA (Hons), BSA

Edward is a Bath based Artist, Engineer and Inventor taking his inspiration from robotic technology and traditional art techniques. He is a member of the Bath Society of Artists https://www.bsaorg.uk/members.html and has exhibited at Private and National Galleries. His work can also be found in various Hotels.

His work usually takes shape in the form of complex experimental sculptures, which are conceptualised through a variety of interesting shapes and forms, combining mathematical and or geometric principals. He also uses other disciplines including drawing, painting and digital art, often combining several different disciplines to achieve a desired outcome. Edward's sculptures start life as sketches of basic shapes and forms that are then "visualized" to completion through a progression of sketches. Most sculptures are “realised” in a self-built, state-of-the-art computer and robotics lab in Bath. The sketches are often translated or refined in CAD programs and then fed through bespoke software programs that allow him to build advanced models and simulations. These are split into components virtually, then built physically and finally reassembled and finished by hand to allow him to create his collections.

Recently he has used his Lab to invent and create devises to help combat COVID-19, during which he founded Foldall Face Shields. Foldall went on to manufacture and deliver more than 80,000 Face Shields in 10 weeks to the NHS and front line workers during the PPE shortage of 2020.

His Lab is still used to invent new technology and it is currently focused on building machines that are tackling the Global Plastic crisis and alternative manufacturing.

Edward did not attend Art School, growing up in Salisbury, Wiltshire he always showed a keen interest in Engineering, Art and Technology. After attending Chafyn Grove School in Salisbury he won a scholarship in Art to Millfield School, Somerset. On completion he was offered places to pursue his future in Art at the Slade Art School and Oxford University. Instead he decided to follow a path into Engineering and Design to learn more about structures, how things are made, software design and problem solving. After completing a degree from Brunel University, he was invited to work for Dyson Ltd as a Graduate Design Engineer. Edward spent 11 years designing, inventing and managing projects for Dyson initially and then becoming an Optimisation Manager and Design Manager, during which he spent time with its founder Sir James Dyson. He worked and lived in China for two years building and managing design teams and projects. In 2016 he left Dyson to become a Commercial Pilot so he could pursue his love for Art, Design and Engineering in his spare time. He takes much of his inspiration from his travels and sights from around the world. In 2021 he was made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

He continues to build his collections working with world class Musicians/Artists/Hotels to challenge the norm, bringing tradition and cutting-edge technology to help bring ideas to life.
